to jim lehrer? he might as well not even showed up last night. he lost control of the debate and mitt romney ran all over him like a truck crushing a bug. we don't need a moderator for the next debate. we didn't have one last night. we'll talk about it, who won who lost, is it going to change anything. first, let's take a little time out to get the latest, today's current news update as always from lisa ferguson out in los angeles. hi lisa, good morning. >> hey bill, welcome back. it is a good day to be back. good morning everyone. with the first debate under their belts the candidates are back on the campaign trail today. president obama starts out where he left off in denver then he heads to madison wisconsin. joe biden is in iowa and mitt romney is in virginia. but who wants to talk about all of that when what you really want to talk about is the debates. a lot of claims thrown around last night. we're going to do some fact checking for you this morning. but first let's start out with a bit of a recap.

. but others have made moderator jim lehrer the target of their criticism arguing he let the argue get out of control. tonight derek says he defies any of those folks to do it any better. >> yeah, anita, i know this because i've done it before it. several times. i tell you, in politics the debate moderator is a lot like the king of england. fancy title. not much real power. once i moderated a debate during which an uninvited candidate came on stage to take part. i looked in vain to the organizers to do something. when they shrugged, what was i going to do? i waved him on in. homeboy was a nut. i think he had a few beverages. back in the '90s, i hosted a radio discussion which included, by the way, yes, that was me, it included then mayor marion barry, and when he repeatedly ignored my instructions and my warnings and kept right on talking, i finally had the engineer to cuts microphone. that's what i had to do to corral one big city mayor in an environment i completely controlled. so imagine jim lehrer that in debate hall. he can't cut anybody's microphone and he's dealing with the presiden

at the beginning of the subjects that jim leherer will introduce. and discussing not policing 30-second rebuttals and 60-second statements. none of that red light stuff with the clocks and all of that stuff. and when you're in mitt romney's position, where he's actually trying to hide some things, trying to hide the details of the deduction side of his tax plan, he's still hiding his tax returns. when you're that candidate who has things that you don't want to talk about, those very narrow rules are your friend. the red light is your friend. the very limited 30-second response, 60-second response works well for candidate who trying to dodge and trying to get away from things. president obama, i think is going to have an advantage in the way the non-rules are in this debate tonight. and i also think that mitt romney has come off a series of really easy debates. we have to remember, mitt romney triumphed in a republican presidential field that was the worst republican presidential field in the history of the republican party. those are the debates he won. he was the one on the stage who did not loo

weeks on that, chris. i think every debate moderator starting with jim lehrer tomorrow night is going to demand specifics in the way chris wallace tried to do last week on fox. and i also think that the numbers are emblematic of values in this case. people want to know about mitt romney. they're undecided. i disagree with chuck a little bit. i think people are prepared to blame the president enough to dismiss him if, as chuck says, they are secure about romney. it's that last piece that romney hasn't done, and forcing him to discuss the details of his tax plan is not a way necessarily to win those undecided voters at this point because i doubt that many of them like the idea of a big tax cut for millionaires. >> what do you think, chuck, of george wills' column where he says america will advance when it learns how to fire a black president, an african-american president. we haven't advanced that far. what do you make of this comment in his column today? like the orioles fired frank robinson. >> i have talked to a lot of republicans who believe that they do believe that there is a high

$22 and texas. that is otherwise known as a poll tax, during the jim crow era. in texas, only 81 of 254 counties in texas have a dmv. if you cannot have idea and you live and accounting without i.d., how are you supposed to get to an office in texas to be able to get an i.d.? there are a lot of problems in practicalities obtain this i.d. you have states that are rushing to implement these laws and are implementing them in 2012. you have a lot of commissions, the carter-baker commission after the 2000 election that says that need to wake two election cycles to implement this idea to make sure everything happens. the last thing i would say is of a vote is not like getting on an airplane or buying sudafed. it is a right that many people have died for in this country, that people have blood for in this country. anytime we restrict their right to vote, particularly on the basis of race or class, we should be very, very, very careful about doing it and only do it if there is a pressing need to do so. my feeling is there is no reason to have this kind of government- issued i.d. people d

think? >> well, it's hard to imagine that somebody, either jim lehrer or the president himself, won't bring up the 47% video because it has been devastating to romney. obama has used it in ads and it plays into the perception of romney as a very rich guy who is completely out of touch with ordinary voters. however, i can't imagine that romney hasn't are practiced responses to that. he's already had an ad where he sits down, faces the camera, he tries to assure voters that he wants to help 100% of americans, everybody. but the danger for romney is seeming fake or false when he tries to connect. he has, no doubt, practiced a lot, rehearsed a lot. he has a lot of answers already planned but can he seem genuine when he's given that answer -- those answers as something to watch out for? >> now, erin, the 47%, according to all polling, has really crushed romney. the latest poll shows 45% of americans said it gave them a more negative view of romney. now the polls show 55% had a negative reaction. so he has to deal with it if it comes up and it's likely to come up. you heard cynthia say th

seconds, buzzer, things like that. it's up to the discretion of the moderator, jim leierer. that's going to be up to him. but there's supposed to be a lot of leeway here over how long the conversations go. the debate is on domestic policy. 90 minutes is supposed to be devoted to the economy specifically with governing and health care. but we'll see if the general nature of those areas allows libya to come up, which we know the romney folks want to do. debates are as much about style as substance and this is a reality show where obama and romney will meet in the first time in nearly five years before their biggest audience of the campaign. the first 2008 presidential debate between the president and john mccain got seven times the audience of the highest rated 2012 republican primary debate. think about that. seven times. past debates show romney and obama have to worry about cut away shots that are less than flattering. in the past both candidates have come across as irritable, patronizing or disengaged. this was chris christie's advice to the candidates yesterday. >> what you do is go o
